A Deafening Silence…

Disaster strikes leaving silence across Monkey Towers wasn’t quite what I’d hoped to write as the opening line on my first blog since the new site went live but then why do I ever think things will run smoothly?

My 40th birthday trip to Amsterdam was out of the way and a long overdue mix for the podcast was ready for recording and live radio shows were scheduled so what happened a week or so ago was every DJ’s nightmare…

My hard drive packed up!

20 years worth of music in excess of 12,000 tunes snatched  from my grasp in an instant.  I’ve no idea why however do you remember the feeling of having your dinner money robbed by a bigger kid in the playground as you headed off to spend it on £2.00 worth of sweets full of E numbers?  Well, it felt like that… It was absolutely soul destroying and for two days thereafter I could think of nothing else besides what I could do to get them back.

It was the 3rd piece of electronic equipment to go belly up in the space of a week.   Firstly a speaker with known design issues started to kick out intermittent sound due to an over heating capacitor chucking a wobbler which was followed by a little mishap with my microphone and cable though I’ve only myself to blame for the latter…

Somehow a one man disco at Monkey Towers allowed me to get myself in a bit of a tangle.  I’m not quite sure how but that cable managed to wrap itself around my legs with all the stealth of a Python about to nail its first bit of prey for months.  I didn’t even realise and one monkey shuffle too many meant both the mic and cable end ended up in about ten pieces on my living room floor.  The saving grace was the fact that Behringer make sturdy mixers so mine didn’t move an inch.  I did however mean I nearly broke my b****y neck heading off to bust some moves on the Monkey Tower dance floor! 🙂

As things stand… there’s no new mix for the podcast but there has been live radio shows for the last two Sundays.  The show must go on! Right?  My wing commander Danny is the man to thank for that.  He had some of my tunes and was round with them in a flash, we were due on air three hours after the hard drive packed up and all I wanted to do was sulk.  He lifted the mood and the scheduled two hour back to back show we broadcast turned into three hours and while it was on the fly with limited tracks to choose from, it was a blast and the perfect tonic…

Plans A, B & C have so far failed in trying to recover the data and now I’m waiting for the outcome of Plan D.  The hard drive has been rushed off to hospital for life saving surgery and  I’m four days into a ten day wait to find out the results. It’s going to be a long ten days for sure and although they say silence is golden… for a few hours on that dreaded Sunday it was absolute torture!

I know it’s my fault and yes I should have had things backed up but, for whatever reason, most of those tunes aren’t.  I’ve put myself on the naughty step as a result and even contemplated a stint in my own gimp cupboard so it’s fair to say whatever the outcome of Plan D is, I’ve learnt a very painful lesson!
